about
I wrote this composition for small orchestra in 2009 for a competition. The competition asked for a piece of music related to the german town Lübeck. To get an inspiration I read some articles about Lübeck and its history. Soon I discovered, that the old town of Lübeck is known for its seven church-towers. The churches are Marien-Church, St.-Jakobi-Church, Aegidien-Church, Cathedral of Lübeck and Petri-Church, two of them, Marien-Church and Cathedral of Lübeck, have two towers. The Petri-Church was destroyed during the second world war and is used today for events. Inspired by this special environment I developed the idea to write a composition about a tourist walking through Lübeck. The tourist would always hear the ringing of church-bells except when he passes the Petri-Church, because that church is not anymore used religiously. The tourist is emotionally and physically affected by the bells and the impressions of the town and the impressions and emotions are layed over the ringing of the bells. Each church is characterized by its sound. My composition consists of five different parts with transitions, when the passenger is going from one church to another. The tone-material for the other instruments is exactly the opposite of the church-bells,, so if the church-bells are A,D,E for an example I would avoid these four notes for that part resulting in a strict division of the churches and the „outer world“. Regarding the instrumentation I use tubular bells to imitate the church bells. Because the bells occupy some space within the frequency-range I decided to work with a slim orchestra to leave space in the middle. You can hear the following instruments:
Horn
Piccolo-Trumpet
Trumpet
Tuba
Timpani
Military Snare
Tubular Bells
Piano
Violin-section
Bass-section
