about
I am a long time admirer of Chuck Schuldiner and his band Death. Schuldiner has not only invented the whole genre, he has also developed it further and further and was always at the forefront of Death-Metal. He is also one of only a few songwriters, who has constantly honed and raised his vision, so the complexity of his songs and his ability asa guitarist has raised throughout his career.
This instrumental from the Death-album "Human" is a fine example of his craft and with this arrangement I want to show how good he was as a composer, because not all people outside the Death Metal scene will recognize this.
In my opinion a good arrangement has to alter the original, because you have to apply the music to a different instrumentation. A string quartet can not deliver the power and raw aggression of a Metal-band, but it can make the composition clearer and direct the view on counterpoint, chord structure, drawing a more intimate picture of the composition. So I have made the chords more complex, added counter-lines etc. I have also changed the structure a bit, because I think the strong melodic ideas of Schuldiner during the first part of "Cosmic sea" are very worth to be repeated.
